On this day in history, January 24th, in 41 A.D., Caligula was assassinated as the result of a conspiracy between his Praetorian Guards, members of the Imperial Court, and various members of the Senate.
Within hours they had also killed his wife, Milonia Caesonia, who was said to have been so struck with grief at the news of her husband’s death, she willingly offered herself to the assassin. They also murdered their one year old daughter, Julia Drusilla. The little girl had jumped on her mother’s assassin, kicking at him and biting him, and she was killed by having her head smashed against a wall.
The same day, the Praetorian Guard declared Caligula’s uncle Claudius the new Emperor.
